Stansted sits well north of London, off the M11, and is a considerably longer run from Burnham, Slough, Windsor, Maidenhead or Marlow than Heathrow or Gatwick.
The airport has a single terminal building, unlike Heathrow or Gatwick, which makes the pickup point straightforward once you're there — the complication with Stansted is almost entirely the distance and the route, not the terminal itself.
Getting there from our coverage area means crossing London on the M25 before joining the M11 north to Junction 8, then a short run in on the A120. Depending on which side of London you start from and the time of day, the M25 itself can be the slowest part of the whole journey, more so than the final stretch up the M11.

Stansted is Ryanair's largest UK base, so the terminal handles a high volume of short-haul departures, particularly early mornings and evenings — if you're booking an early flight out of Stansted, we build in extra time for the M25 in case of overnight roadworks, which turn up on that stretch more often than on the M4 side of London.
The terminal has a short-stay drop-off directly outside, chargeable after a few minutes, and the Stansted Express rail link runs into the same building, so it's a straightforward single-building pickup regardless of which airline you've flown with or which pier your gate is on.

Stansted's main terminal building also has a satellite pier reached by an automated transit system rather than a walk, similar in principle to the satellite buildings at Heathrow Terminal 5, though most arriving passengers won't notice it since it only affects certain gates. Arrivals all funnel back through the same main building regardless.
The final approach on the A120 passes close to the Stansted Mountfitchet and Bishop's Stortford turn-offs, and traffic building up around those junctions during the evening commute is a more common cause of a slow last few miles than anything at the airport itself.
Because so much of the route runs through central London's orbital motorway rather than a direct A-road, we treat the M25 crossing as the variable to plan around rather than the airport end of the trip — a Stansted booking timed around the Dartford Crossing or the M25's western junctions at rush hour needs a wider buffer than the same distance would suggest on a map.
The terminal's departures hall has separate zones for different airlines' check-in desks, but security is a single shared area, so once you're through, the walk to most gates is fairly short compared with somewhere like Heathrow Terminal 3 — useful to know if a Stansted booking is running slightly later than planned.
