Getting from Heathrow Terminal 5 to Windsor

Terminal 5 to Windsor is one of the shorter, more forgiving Heathrow runs, and also one of the more commonly mis-planned ones by anyone relying on a general map rather than local knowledge of the roads around the airport.

The route

From T5, the direct way to Windsor avoids the central tunnel entirely — T5 sits on its own spur off the airport's southern perimeter, so a driver who knows the area picks up the A308 towards Old Windsor and Datchet rather than looping back through the terminal complex. Done right, it's a run of around 20 to 25 minutes. Done by someone unfamiliar with the perimeter road layout, it can easily pick up an extra ten minutes of doubling back.

What it costs

A saloon runs a fixed £16 from Windsor to Heathrow (the same fare applies in either direction), £25 for an executive car — confirmed at booking, unaffected by which terminal you're using or how the traffic looks on the day. Given four people can share a saloon, that's often cheaper per head than a single Heathrow Express or rail-and-bus combination, and considerably less walking with luggage.

Why the terminal matters

T5 is physically separate from Terminals 2, 3 and 4, connected by the airport's internal tunnel system but not by a quick surface link. Telling us T5 specifically at booking — rather than just "Heathrow" — means the driver takes the correct route from the start instead of defaulting to the main terminal area and correcting once they realise which one you actually need.

Timing around the crossing

Windsor's town centre roads narrow considerably around the castle and the river, and on a summer weekend with tourist traffic, the last mile into town can take longer than the whole motorway stretch before it. If you're catching a flight rather than arriving on one, build in a few extra minutes for this stretch specifically, especially on a Saturday.
